Leiomyoma

Leiomyomas are benign tumors that originate in smooth muscle cells of the myometrium, which is the thick middle layer of the uterine wall that contracts during childbirth and menstruation. As a result, leiomyomas can increase the risk of infertility, miscarriages, or other issues during pregnancy.

Causes

Estrogen and progesterone, two hormones that stimulate the development of the uterine lining during each menstrual cycle in preparation for pregnancy, appear to promote the growth of fibroids. Fibroids contain more estrogen and progesterone receptors than normal uterine muscle cells do.

Pilar leiomyomas are the most common of the cutaneous types and the lesions are often multiple and painful. A burning or sharp, stabbing pain may occur spontaneously or can be provoked by touch/pressure and cold temperature.

Symptoms
  1. Heavy menstrual bleeding.
  2. Menstrual periods lasting more than a week.
  3. Pelvic pressure or pain.
  4. Frequent urination.
  5. Difficulty emptying the bladder.
  6. Constipation.
  7. Backache or leg pains.
